How do a dancer and a painter work together?

a collaboration with dancer Tonje Aas Molnes

Out of a project cooperation with dancer Tonje Aas Molnes was birthed a series of paintings in movement. I am now first showing the three first paintings in my May exhibition at dråpe kaffehus.

It is definitely a fresh and different way of paintings where I am playing with selection of movement sections and puzzling them together on the canvas. I am myself curious where this will lead to next.

Paintings in movement

Tonje and I had an interactive performance at Mottaket in February 2023, to test the waters with this cooperation. In it we combined drawing, dance and painting and Tonje also uses tissue to not only use the poor but also the air for movement.

In our cooperation we started just by improvising, with Tonje dancing and me sketching her movements. Around 100 sketches must have come out of these exercises. Afterwards took Tonje these sketches and lined them up in a sequence and worked out a choreography based on my sketches. During that process I started to develop the first painting of the series.

One of my fascination and inspirations is the human body in movement. How beautiful to use a dancer as a model and capture the movements on canvas.
